One of the “young lions,” Rick Margitza is a renowned tenor saxophonist most inspired by Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, and John Coltrane. He started on the violin at age four (his grandfather was a cellist, and his father a violinist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra), studied classical piano for a bit, and also played oboe before switching to tenor saxophone in high school.
Margitza then attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Berklee College of Music, University of Miami, and finally Loyola University in New Orleans, where he lived and played for four years. Rick next toured with Maynard Ferguson, Flora Purim and Airto before moving to New York in 1988, where he spent part of 1988 in Miles Davis’ group and then cut three sets as a leader for Blue Note Records from 1989-1991. His 1994 outing for Challenge found Margitza showing increasing individuality.
Tonight, he presents the Rick Margitza New Orleans All-Stars, featuring: Rick Margitza - saxophone Michael Pellera - piano Steve Masakowski - guitar Chuck Bergeron - bass Jeff Boudreaux - drums
