Snug Harbor presents
Trumpet Mafia with Mahmoud Chouki
Monday April 15th, 2024 7:30pm (Doors: 7:00pm)
From its organic beginnings in 2013 as a group of trumpeters getting together at composer and educator Ashlin Parker’s New Orleans apartment to share practice techniques, the Trumpet Mafia has grown into an international collective of creative excellence. Their unexpected arrangements mix traditional jazz and hip-hop. Since 2016, the rotating assembly of horn players has performed energetic "takeovers'' both in street pop-ups and at numerous festivals in New Orleans and abroad, including the New Orleans Jazz Festival and French Quarter Festival, garnering an OffBeat Magazine "Best Emerging Artist" Award in 2017.
Mahmoud Chouki is a Moroccan master guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator currently living in New Orleans. Chouki teaches music at the Lycée Français de la Nouvelle Orléans and is the music curator for the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). Most recently, he composed the music score for the 2021 Sundance Award winning film, “Ma Belle, Ma Beauty.” Chouki was awarded 2020’s “Best Emerging Artist” by OffBeat Magazine and "Best World Music Artist'' Award in 2022 by the Gambit.
