Each year, Snug Harbor and the New Orleans Jazz Museum pay tribute to one of New Orleans' most influential musicians, Danny Barker, on his birthday month, and his departure month. Barker is dear to Snug Harbor, as his band Danny's Jazz Hounds played at Snug Harbor in the 1980s - Sundays being their residency for several years, prior to his passing on March 13, 1994. New Orleans guitar legend Detroit Brooks leads a band of musicians who were directly mentored by Barker.
The Danny Barker Birthday Tribute Band tonight features:
ABOUT DANNY BARKER: Danny Barker was one of the most influential New Orleans musicians from the 1930s on through the 1980s. A prolific banjoist, guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, bandleader and author, Barker was rhythm guitarist for popular artists such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway, Lucky Millinder, and later Wynton Marsalis and Dr. John, who were his own students. His Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band, active in the 1970s - 1980s, would prove to be one of the most fertile grounds for the next generations of New Orleans style musicians, whose members included the Marsalis brothers, Dr. Michael White, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Shannon Powell, and many more. Also a prolific writer intent on documenting jazz life through his own lens, Barker’s memoir, “A Life In Jazz” is one of the earliest autobiographies of a local jazz icon to receive wide publication.
