SHANNON POWELL TRIO

Sun April 2 @ 8:00 pm

We’re bringing that Tremé flavored Carnival spirit to the Marigny at our place tonight! Join us for Bacchus Sunday aka the night before Lundi Gras with the roots of the rhythms that drive our second lines and our parades…

Known as the “King of Tremé,” Shannon Powell is a highly sought after drummer and percussionist who has achieved international acclaim for his commanding technique and style, rooted in the characteristic funky beats of New Orleans.

As a youth growing up in New Orleans’ storied Faubourg Tremé neighborhood, one of America’s oldest Black communities and home to many of the city’s jazz greats, Powell was surrounded by music since birth. By age 6, he was playing drums regularly for his church, the First Garden Christ Church. It was a natural transition from the raw spiritualism and rhythms of his church to the driving grooves of traditional New Orleans jazz. Soon, Powell began visiting and performing at the historic Preservation Hall Jazz alongside local legends such as Cié Frasier and Freddie Coleman, a place where he can often be found playing to this day.
Tonight, he presents The Shannon Powell Trio, featuring
Shannon Powell – drums, vocals
Cris Severin – bass
Kyle Roussel – piano
+ Special Guest: Christian Winther – saxophone
