JAZZ FEST: HERLIN RILEY & FRIENDS featuring EMMET COHEN
May 5, 2022 @ 9:00 pm
SNUG HARBOR OFFICIAL JAZZ FEST 2022 LINE-UP:
New Orleans is a drummer’s town. But in this town full of first class drummers, Herlin Riley is “the” drummer. The Baron of the Boom Boom. The Pulse that keeps the life flowing through any body of work.
Born into a musical family steeped in gospel, blues and jazz, Herlin was asked by Wynton Marsalis to join him in New York in 1988 where Herlin stayed for almost two decades, all the while still maintaining a home in New Orleans. He is still a regularly featured musician with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, but back in his hometown when he was not on tour with Ahmad Jamal, Dr. John, or Harry Connick Jr. He lights up any stage with just his presence alone, and always fires up the first class musicians who love to play with him.
Join us tonight for Herlin’s Jazz Fest 2022 set, featuring special guests from his touring band, including:
Herlin Riley – drums
Russell Hall – bass
Emmet Cohen – piano
Godwin Louis – saxophone
Bruce Harris – trumpet
*PLEASE NOTE* Emmet Cohen is the special guest for Herlin’s series ONLY on May 5th. Stay tuned here for Herlin’s band lineup for May 21st, to be announced on May 12th.
Special Guest is the multifaceted American jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen – a vanguard of his generation’s advancement of music and the related arts. A recognized prodigy, Cohen began Suzuki method piano instruction at age three. Downbeat Magazine observed that his “nimble touch, measured stride and warm harmonic vocabulary indicate he’s above any convoluted technical showmanship.” He leads his namesake ensemble, The Emmet Cohen Trio, is a vibrant solo performer, and is in constant demand as a sideman.
In addition to leading the Emmet Cohen Trio, Cohen has appeared regularly with Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Jimmy Cobb, George Coleman, Jimmy Heath, Tootie Heath, Houston Person, Kurt Elling, Billy Hart, Brian Lynch, and Lea DeLaria, among others. He is a member of Christian McBride‘s trio Tip City and serves as pianist and music director for jazz vocalist Veronica Swift. In recent years, Cohen held membership in both the Herlin Riley Quintet and the Ali Jackson Trio. He is a Mack Avenue recording artist whose premier album on the label, “Future Stride” (2021), features contemporary stars Marquis Hill and Melissa Aldana, and held top spots on international jazz charts for weeks.
Emmet is the winner of the 2019 American Pianists Awards and the Cole Porter Fellow of the American Pianists Association, and Artist-in-Residence at the University of Indianapolis. He placed first in both the 2014 American Jazz Pianists Competition and the 2011 Phillips Piano Competition at the University of West Florida and, as a finalist in the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition, he was received in the Oval Office by President Obama.
During the 2020-2021 pandemic, Emmet created an incredible sense of community through his Monday evening pandemic performance series, “Live From Emmet’s Place.” Tens of thousands worldwide join him every Monday evening for joyful and uplifting jazz. There is no doubt that these concerts have helped countless music lovers find happiness during these challenging times. Not to mention, garnered thousands of international fans for this rising young jazz artist via this social media… many of whom are eager to experience him live, now.
In addition to one appearance as a part of the University of New Orleans’ Jazz Studies campus educational program, this will be Emmet’s only performance outside the Jazz Fest itself this week. One night only – a set not to be missed!
