JASON MARSALIS QUINTET: Ode to Congo Square

March 4, 2022 @ 10:00 pm

Join us tonight for Jason’s birthday party!
Jason presents 2 special shows tonight to close-out his month-long series this season entitled “The Roots of Jazz” which traces the genre’s sonic history through the cultural practices of Congo Square and all who converged there. Join us to celebrate one of our dearest favorites, beloved Snug family, on his birthday. There might even be cake!

Jason Marsalis is the youngest son of piano patriarch and jazz luminary Ellis Marsalis Jr. and their famous New Orleans musical family, declared America’s “First Family of Jazz” upon the presentation of their NEA Jazz Masters Award in 2011.

In addition to his renown as a drummer, Jason is also a respected vibraphonist whose 2018 release “Melody Reimagined” with his 21st Century Trad Jazz Band rose swiftly to the top of the Billboard jazz chart. With a fire in his heart and a passion for the music, his will to swing has never been more resolute. The maturity and the command Jason possesses over his music is clearly evident to those who have heard or seen him.
Tonight, Jason presents the final installment of his SouthArts series in collaboration with the Congo Square Preservation Society and the Congo Square Drummers Circle this season, “The Roots of Jazz,” where he and many of New Orleans’ key percussionists explore the myriad rhythms, songs, dances and traditions that have woven together over centuries from many places in Africa to the Caribbean to Latin and South America to New Orleans and beyond to create what we popularly call “jazz” today.
