GEOVANE SANTOS: Tribute to Antônio Carlos Jobim
Thu January 26 @ 10:00 pm
Guitarist, composer, arranger and vocalist Geovane P. Santos was born in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He started playing guitar at age 11 and began studying music seriously at 15. A first generation musician in his family, Santos was motivated by his parents to pursue music as a profession. His passion for jazz brought him to New Orleans in 2015, where he studied at UNO and was awarded the 2017 Louis Armstrong Jazz Composition Award through the ASCAP Foundation.
Santos studied classical guitar, harmony and counterpoint, choir conducting, and jazz history, at Centro de Formação Artística, but also grew up listening to Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Dire Straights, and James Brown, in addition to popular Brasilian samba artists.
After completing his Bachelors of Music in Brazil and playing in several regarded bands and orchestras there, meeting New Orleans guitarist Carl LeBlanc convinced Santos to move to New Orleans, where he earned his Masters in Music Composition at the University of New Orleans under Steve Masakowski and Brian Seeger, and is currently getting his PhD in Latin American Studies at Tulane University focusing on a critical reading of the music of Brazil through the lenses of History, Race Studies, and Music Theory. As a local New Orleans musician, Santos utilizes his guitar and his voice to bring Brazilian music to American audiences, concentrating on his own original compositions, as well as Bossa Nova and MPB repertoires.
Tonight, he presents his tribute to late Brasilian multi-instrumentalist and composer, Antônio Carlos Jobim, to whom Santos published a tribute album in 2019, simply entitled “Jobim.“
