Join us this evening for a very special, intimate, limited capacity premiere screening of director Sascha Just’s documentary film on “the life and complicated times of pianist ELLIS Marsalis Jr.”
“ELLIS” the film is currently touring international film festivals, and makes its hometown premiere this week with two screenings; one on May 3rd at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, and one here at Snug Harbor on May 4th.
As many know, Snug Harbor was our late, great Ellis Marsalis’ artistic residential home for over 30 years. He held court on our stage nearly every Friday night for over two decades, featuring his own bands, special guest icons, and his rising young student musicians who would go on to become stars of their own, including his own four renowned sons. Metaphorically speaking, Snug’s is “the stage that Ellis built.” The magic of his spirit can still be felt present today, when we experience intimate sonic moments in our listening room, a room now often led by his sons, mentees, and fellow jazz pioneers.
This special screening of the first feature documentary about his life and legacy will be a surreal one; as we immerse ourselves in the film, inside the very room, facing the very stage, where Ellis made so much of his magic… a room featured in the film itself.
This evening’s screening will host an opening reception and cocktail hour from 5pm – 6pm including a meet & greet with the filmmaker, Jason Marsalis, and some of Ellis’ band members, while ticketing and seating take place.
Immediately following the screening, we will host two live Musical Tributes to Ellis Marsalis presented by Jason Marsalis and the E-Quintet, ticketed separately:
5:00pm: Doors Open for Cocktails, Ticketing, Meet & Greet
6:00pm – 7:45pm: Film Screening ($10 Advance, $15 Door)
7:45pm – 9:00pm: Optional Cocktails & Post-Reception in the Bar Room
9:00pm – 10:30pm: Live Musical Tribute Performance – Early Set
