BILL SUMMERS ALL-STARS: Tribute to Cachao

Bill Summers is a New Orleans-based master drummer and percussionist specializing in Afro-Cuban and Afro-Haitian styles, though he is perhaps most popularly known from his work in jazz fusion circles as co-founder of Grammy Award-winning groups The Headhunters with Herbie Hancock, and later Los Hombres Calientes with Irvin Mayfield. In addition to playing with other legends such as Aretha Franklin, Summers was also Quincy Jones’ go-to percussionist for many years.
Tonight, Summers presents his New Orleans band for a special tribute concert to the late, great bassist and composer, Israel López Valdés. Better known as “Cachao,” or Cachao López, the Cuban musician is widely known as the co-creator of the mambo, and a master of the descarga, though his career spanned a wide range of music from classical to salsa.
Expect cuts from Cachao’s deep catalog, other influences such as Mongo Santamaria’s version of “Watermelon Man” with the Bill Summers treatment alongside Herbie Hancock’s arrangement, and more that your ears may never have yet feasted upon.

Kind Reminder: Snug Harbor does not serve food inside the Music Room. In order to preserve the integrity, quiet and focus of our world class intimate concerts, only cocktails and soft drinks are available for table service inside the Music Room. However, we encourage you to arrive 90 Minutes prior to your showtime in order to enjoy full, relaxing dinner service in the Dining Room right next door, before getting seated in the Music Room for the show. 8pm ticket holders can also enjoy dinner, dessert or appetizers after the show, with Dining Room seating only guaranteed by submitting your table request before 8pm.
