BANU GIBSON & THE NEW ORLEANS TRAD JAZZ CAMP ALL-STARS

June 23, 2022 @ 8:00 pm

Dubbed the “First Lady of the Bayou,” legendary swinging jazz singer, Banu Gibson (pronounced bah-new) is one of the few vocalists of her generation to maintain exclusive loyalty to songs of the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s. Rather than mimic singers of the past, she mixes fresh renditions of Tin Pan Alley standards and jazz classics by Gershwin, Ellington, Berlin, Carmichael, Waller, Porter, et al. A powerful force on stage as well as on her recordings on the Swing Out label, her enthusiasm and showmanship are highlighted by her wide range and versatility.

Banu and her band appeared on Garrison Keillor’s award-winning NPR series, A Prairie Home Companion, and brought in the millennium in 2000 as the only guest artist of the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall. She’s toured Europe with the legendary, fiery cornetist Wild Bill Davison, and has continuously performed abroad with the New Orleans Hot Jazz in Germany, England, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Australia and Japan.
With an extensive repertoire of songs, her performances cover many high points of America’s golden age of popular music. Not content to copy the past, Banu Gibson is creative within the boundaries of the genre, consistently inventing fresh and imaginative variations, giving new life to timeless, unforgettable music.
Gibson is also the co-founder and executive director of the New Orleans Trad Jazz Camp, alongside Leslie Cooper and Anita Hemeter. Their love for the music inspired the idea for a camp to be held in New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. The camp project gained momentum when these three discovered they had the same passion to create such a camp. Today, the NOTJC teaches the musical styles of early jazz as originated in New Orleans and exposes traditional jazz to a larger audience by hosting an annual music event – in the form of an adult traditional jazz workshop intensive – that raises the level of musicianship and knowledge of this music form at home and abroad.
This year’s New Orleans Trad Jazz Camp takes place June 19th – 25th, and Snug Harbor is pleased to host this special concert during the 2022 week-long intensive tonight, with Banu Gibson & The New Orleans Trad Jazz Camp All-Stars, featuring:
